The pregame clowning by the 21,733 fans in attendance set the tone for a circus like atmosphere full of magic, suspense, and amazement that resulted in a 2-1 victory for the MLS All-Stars.
Despite wholesale substitution at the half, the game never lost its rhythm in the second half. USNMT Captain Clint Dempsey, and the rest of his Seattle Sounders teammates, Obefami Martins, Osvaldo Alonso and De Andre Yedlin were booed when their names where announced during introductions. The result was a wide open, free flowing game that had the crowd on its feet cheering the magic that was before their very eyes.
Bayern midfielders Juan Bernat and Sebastian Rode pushed up into the center of the midfield and regained the battle of the midfield, which resulted in the games first goal. The familiarity between Sounder FC m88 players Clint Dempsey and Obefami Martins was evident right from the start as the two had a couple of head turning one, two touches and a third that looked like a certain goal until the lines man offside flag was instantly raised.
Thierry Henry reminded the crowd of his sniper like instincts of yesteryear when his right footed 35 yard shot barely missed the target. The festivities for the match between the Bayern Munchen and the MLS All-Stars started long before kickoff. After seeing the MLS All-Stars put on a passing clinic in which Michael Bradley, Graham Zusi and Henry ran roughshod in the middle of the field the Bundesliga Champions decided they had seen enough.
In the 70minute Diego Valerie hit a streaking Landon Donovan in front of the Bayern goal and time seemed to stop as Donovan right footed the ball into the center of the goal giving the MLS All-Stars a lead they would not relinquish. Erik Torres headed a perfect pass to Bradley Wrigth-Philips who left footed the sublime pass into the back of the net and the teams where back on level terms after 51 minutes.
American Julian Green substituted for Claudio Pizarro in the 37th minute to loud cheers and they became deafening when Green took at shot that was saved by MLS All-Star goalkeeper Nick Rimando right before the half ended.
Both coaches continued to empty their benches and players from both teams continued to play with passion and commitment.
I thought that both teams played the game the right way, professional and with class, MLS All-Star and Portland Timber Coach Caleb Porter said after the game.

With the tone set by the crowd the MLS All -Stars started the game on the front foot with quick crisp passes that seem to have mesmerized the Bayern players. The goal earned Donovan the MVP award that could have gone to a number of players on both teams. Thierry Henry gave way to Landon Donovan in an emotional exchange of the armband that seemed like a swan song for Donovan. Bayern Head Coach Pep Guardiola played all of the Bayern players who where on Germanys World Cup wining team in the last ten minutes but the substitutions turned out to be in vain
